RESCATE - AGUA (2 domingo) (2017-01-15)

Year A 2 domingo,    15 enero 2017
RESCATE - AGUA

[__fin_ ]

Water Rescue, 2nd Sunday (2017-01-15)

Year A, 2nd Sunday,   January 15, 2017,
WATER RESCUE

[__01_ ] Life depends on water.
New spiritual life – in the BAPTISM, the sacrament of BAPTISM – also depends on the gift of water.

Life depends on water.

At every place on your lawn, in your garden, or in our solar system or galaxy, we predict the existence and life of blades of grass growing….or any plant or animal  … based on the existence and evidence of water.

Whenever we read about NASA or other space exploration projects, we read about the search not only for life but also for water.

If water – [H2O] – were to be discovered, then surely life would follow.  If there are living plants or animals, then there must be water.

Water rescues us. Water saves us.

[__02__]  John the Baptist (JTB) arrives in a locale, in a place, with very little natural water. Water is scarce in the plain and flat lands of the Middle East and in the area around the Jordan River.
But, John the Baptist is not simply concerned with DEHYDRATION …and REHYDRATION, physically.
JTB is not simply concerned with physical, human or terrestrial sources of water.
JTB is not concerned with whether or not his followers are drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water per day.
However, JTB was concerned that the people of his day were not DRINKING in, were not being immersed in, God’s commandments, God’s ways.
And you I may resemble these very early followers of JTB and of Jesus as well.
That is, we might be able to accept a little sip, a little taste of God’s ways.  But, do we want to be immersed? Submerged?

[__03_ ] What we would be one example of this…
For example, you and I might be very willing to follow the Golden Rule, which is a beautiful rule and a way to regulate our lives and to regulate our expectations.  What is the Golden Rule ?
We read in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 7, verse 12: “Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the law and the prophets.”  (Matthew 7:12)
So, it is reasonable for me then to love others so that I will be loved, to be kind to others so that they will be kind to me.
However, even with the the Golden Rule, we might only be speed-skating along the surface of the frozen lake of God’s word, rather than being submerged in God’s word.
Jesus invites us, not only to love those who love us but to love those who do not love us in return.
This does not require – or mean – that we will have equally cordial relationships or daily friendship – with everyone. Some people, it is true, we may have to love from a distance…or we may need time to understand them.
When we are baptized, we are also immersed, submerged in water, in God’s will … and this, for example, means praying for those who do not love us, praying for those who persecute us….  (cf. Matthew 5:43-44)
Or…if we are insulted, do not return insult for insult but return a blessing instead. (1 Peter 3:9)

[__04__]  We are baptized in water not only so that we can be washed or cleansed on the outside but also so that we can know God’s mercy as nourishment  on the inside.

This invites to a deeper, internal understanding
So, for example, we are invited to …
Be compassionate (beneath the surface of our emotions and feelings) when we might feel angry on the surface.

Be a listener (beneath the surface of our mind) …when we might rather use our brain and vocabulary to speak out. Can I listen carefully to what another person is really saying?

And, this invites us to be sympathetic to others, to unite our hearts and minds to others.

For example, St. Paul writes and reminds us “rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep.”  (Romans 12:15)

But, it might be a real challenge for me to rejoice with someone who is rejoicing, someone who is very happy someone who a success that I also desire.   My first reaction – on the surface – might be some envy or jealousy. I might not want to rejoice. Sometimes, being happy – for someone else – is a sacrifice.

Similarly, to weep with those who weep.  Am I not called to sympathy to the sorrow of another person?  We are called to this, though we know we have our own sorrows and difficulties.

Doing so, we accept that baptism and God’s holiness are are meant to touch and penetrate our lives lives, beneath the surface, underground so that we might also have life …and deep roots and connections to Jesus as our Savior.

EPIFANÍA. 3 REYES (2017-01-08)

Epiphany  January 8, 2017

The Three Kings. Epiphany (2017-01-08)

The Three Kings.  Epiphany    January 8, 2017

[___01__]              Brothers and sisters, this Sunday Mass is the celebration of the Feast of the Three Kings which recalls that the action of God gives direction and directions.
The 3 Kings were called, they were invited to Bethlehem. What we read in the Gospel is that they were MAGI – or wise men – with special gifts, particular talents, knowledge of science and of the stars.

[___02__]    How great is the distance, the time, or the mileage from your driveway to Our Lady of Lourdes Church, or to the nearest bank or the bridge or tunnel to New York?
Do we rely on the STARS to calculate this?
In a way, we rely on a STAR in the sky, though this is really an artificial star or satellite . We rely on this energy, this force, this signal ..something beyond ourselves for direction.

[___03__]   How great is the distance, the time, or the mileage for the Three Kings to Bethlehem?
Well, a few thousand years ago, we are pretty certain that they did not have satellites or GPS or digital instruments.
Yet, they did have a knowledge of nature, of the stars.
They were similar to many travelers, and navigators on the land or the sea with trust in the STARS, in the direction, in their knowledge of God’s Creation.

[___04__]     The 3 Kings or Magi were doing something that might make you or me uncomfortable or anxious.
That is, they were willing to leave their own country, their own comfort zone to travel to Bethlehem of Judea.
They were relying on the STARS, on their knowledge of NATURE, and on God’s guidance.
That is, they understood via a sign in nature – through natural means – that something extraordinary was occurring.

[___05__]    We also rely on NATURAL signs and VISIBLE signs in order to see and know.
In our relationships with other people we read signs, we read facial expressions, we read gestures, we read emotions… we may read between the lines.
All of these are natural means of navigation in which we come to understand a deeper reality or truth about someone else.
And, this reading of natural signs is not just for the CIA, or the President to figure out what Russia is going to do next … it is not a special code to broken.
Rather, we are reading SIGNS – naturally – in each other to understand each other better.
And, is it not true that husbands and wives, mothers and fathers communicate not only by words but also by signs and signals.  We read it in them.

[___06__]    In a similar way, we learn the Commandments of God not simply by memorization of the 10 Commandments.
For example, we may or may not be able to recite and name that the 7th Commandment is  “Thou Shalt Not Steal.”
God communicated by special and supernatural mean to record this Command to Moses in the 10 Commandments.
However, is it not true that this command  - to honesty – is written in our hearts.  I know myself, that I feel something – and I think you feel something – you sense something – when someone is being completely honest …or, perhaps, not.
It’s not a star, but it is a natural sign.  It is the difference between light and darkness, or the difference between the presence of God and the absence of God.

[___07__]     The 3 Kings were seeking the presence of God and following a star in order to discover Jesus.

[___08__]    The Three Kings were knowledgeable, also known as the 3 Wise Men, or the Magi.
They had connections in a scientific and intellectual and spiritual way.
They were called to use their intelligence, their talent to discern God’s ways, to love God with all of their heart, mind and strength. We are also called to use all of our heart, mind and strength to live with honesty, compassion, mercy.

[___09__]     The 3 Kings had connections.  King number 1, ___ 2,  __ 3 then met a fourth king and a fifth king. King number 4 was Herod. King number 5 was Jesus.
Herod was also interested in the child, in the newborn Savior.
Now, it would have been very logical and comfortable for the 3 Kings to form an alliance with this fourth King, with King Herod. Herod wants to know them, wants to know what they know.
The 3 Kings are directed in a dream not to make friends with Herod, not to hang around with him, not to be tagged with him, and not to follow his directions or instructions.
To grow closer to God, the 3 Kings remind us to take a route or path which God has designed. It may not be the shortest or the easiest. We are called to read signs. We may even have to avoid certain people on the way.

Resolved. Rested. (Mary, Mother of God, 2017-01-01)

Solemnity Mary Mother of God,  New Year’s Day 2017,

[___01__]    In the little town of Bethlehem, Mary and Joseph are with Jesus. Jesus is lying in the manger. They are at rest. They are at rest and receiving guests.

This [restfulness] will continue in the Gospel of next Sunday, the Gospel of the Epiphany when the Three Kings visit. The Magi from the East.

Now, they [the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph] are at rest.

[___02__]     When we are at rest, we are better able to …

-         Think about (ponder !)  our resolutions
-         Think about (ponder/meditate) our commitments.
January 1st is a day of rest for many of us.

A day of rest and day that we naturally think about [ponder] resolutions and the new year.

At a time of rest, we are more resolved, more peaceful, able to think about (consider) our commitments.

On this day of rest, we are very mindful that things are changing that it is a new year.  We have all these resolutions. Then, sometime during the week, we think – what year is it?

We forget, perhaps, that the year has changed (elapsed).

[___03__]    Nevertheless, this time of rest is important for us to make resolutions.

Mary, the Mother of God, makes a resolution first to become the mother of our Savior.

And, in that moment of resolution, Jesus becomes our Savior, even before he is born, even before he takes one step, says one word, or makes one resolution.

[___04__]     At times of rest, we also discover our true identity.

Parents,  occasionally are permitted to rest. For example, on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, they are permitted to rest.

If their children are not too small, they can rest, sleep a little later. It is similar to New Year’s Day.

On Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, we don’t simply celebrate for what they do, but for simply for who they are are, that they exist.
The less they “do”, the better. What is important is their presence and our knowledge of their presence.

[ELABORATE: FEAST + GOSPEL – what we recall on this Feast is not necessarily what Mary or Jesus have done, but simply that they are, that they exist. And, Mary – in this Gospel is pondering who Jesus is – as she welcomes the shepherds who have come to adore him.]

[___05__]    We also remember – on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day – simply that they are, including for our mothers and fathers who have died or passed away.

[___06__]     A resolution is something we make based on our identity.

For example, our parents tell us things to do based on their identity. We, perhaps, did not always want to hear it, but it was a valid reason for our parents to tell us…

► “because I am your mother”
►  “because I am your father.”

This is their resolution, their profession of faith, their identity.

[___07__]   This relationship of parent-child transcends time, it is eternal.

On this feast, we remember that Mary exists as the Mother of God not for what she herself has done but because she has said YES and because of what God has done in her life.

With Mary’s new resolution – her resolution makes a new year, a new time for all of us.

[___08__]  This relationship of Mary to Jesus which begins before his birth – and continues after his death – is an image and reminder to all of us, in our relationships to our parents and to our children.

This is a reminder to all parents and grandparents and children.

And, if a child were to be separated – by death – from his or her mother or father, a child can trust that his or her mother or father prays for him in heaven.

Mothers and fathers  and grandparents can trust that one day they will be reunited with their children.

This is because of Mary’s yes, which enables Jesus to live, to conquer sin and death, to make a new year, a new time for us. [___fin__]
